Ingredients
- Phyllo dough: 1 pound package, thawed
- Granny Smith Apples: 3 medium, peeled, cored, and diced
- Butter: 1 cup, melted
- Granulated Sugar: 1/2 cup
- Ground Cinnamon: 1 teaspoon
- Ground Nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon
- Chopped Walnuts or Pecans: 1/2 cup
- Maple Syrup: 1/2 cup
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan. In a large bowl, combine the diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Step 2: Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the prepared pan and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 5 more sheets. Sprinkle half of the apple mixture evenly over the phyllo. Sprinkle the nuts over the apples.
- Step 3: Layer 6 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with melted butter. Spread the remaining apple mixture evenly over the phyllo.
- Step 4: Top with the remaining phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter. Use a sharp knife to score the top layers of phyllo into diamond or square shapes.
- Step 5: Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Step 6: While the baklava is still hot, drizzle the maple syrup evenly over the top. Let cool completely before cutting along the scored lines and serving.
Notes
- To keep your Apple Pie Baklava crisp, store it at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- For a warm, comforting treat, gently reheat individual portions in a toaster oven or microwave for a few seconds until warmed through.
- Serve your baklava with a dollop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of Greek yogurt to balance the sweetness.
- Don't skimp on the butter between the phyllo layers – it's essential for creating that signature flaky texture!
