Ingredients
- Ground beef (80/20) – 1 pound
- Onion, chopped – 1/2 cup
- Green bell pepper, chopped – 1/2 cup
- Ketchup – 1 cup
- Brown sugar, packed – 2 tablespoons
- Worcestershire sauce – 2 tablespoons
- Yellow mustard – 1 tablespoon
- Hamburger buns – 6
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
- Step 2: Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Step 3: Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Step 4: Reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken.
- Step 5: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Leftover sloppy joe mix can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- For best results, reheat the sloppy joe mix in a saucepan over medium heat, adding a splash of water or beef broth if it seems too thick.
- Pile your sloppy joes high with your favorite toppings, like shredded cheese, coleslaw, or even a few pickle slices for extra tang!
- To boost the flavor, try browning the ground beef with a pinch of smoked paprika or chili powder before adding the vegetables.
